Every watercolour painter learns the same lesson sooner or later: once you’ve painted over the white of the paper, you can’t get it back. Watercolour is transparent, so there’s no white paint that truly recreates the glow of untouched paper. That’s why masking matters so much, and it’s why Frisk has become a familiar name to so many UK artists. Its products are designed to protect the areas you want to keep clean, so you can paint freely around them and reveal crisp, bright shapes afterwards.

The word “frisket” has long been used by artists, especially airbrush artists and illustrators, for any material that masks off part of an image while you paint, and Frisk has built its reputation on doing exactly that well. The range is small and focused, which is part of the appeal. Rather than trying to do everything, Frisk concentrates on masking.

The first key product is Frisk Film, sometimes called frisket film. It’s a temporary, low-tack plastic adhesive film that protects the surface underneath your work while you paint or airbrush over it. The matt surface accepts pencil, so you can draw your shapes directly onto the film, cut them out with a craft knife and position them exactly where you need them. When you’re finished, you peel the film away to reveal clean, sharp edges. It’s a favourite with airbrush artists, illustrators, model makers and anyone working on smooth surfaces who needs precise, repeatable masks. Frisk Film comes on rolls in 10-inch and 15-inch widths, so you can cut pieces to suit the size of your work.

For watercolour painters, the star of the range is Frisk masking fluid, and in particular the blue masking fluid with a fineliner applicator. Masking fluid is a liquid latex that you apply to the paper before painting. It dries to a rubbery film that resists paint, and once your painting is dry, you rub it away to reveal the white paper underneath. The blue colour makes it easy to see exactly where you’ve applied it, which is a real help compared with clear or white fluids. The fineliner bottle has a precision 0.5mm applicator tip, which is ideal for the kind of tiny details that are almost impossible to paint around: ship rigging, fences, fine grasses, whiskers, fur, sparkles on water and highlights in eyes. A refill bottle is available too, so you can keep the fineliner topped up.

Using masking fluid takes a little practice, and a few tips make all the difference. Always make sure your paper is completely dry before you apply it, and let the fluid dry fully before painting over it. Use a good-quality watercolour paper, as cheaper papers are more likely to tear when you remove the mask. Don’t leave masking fluid on the paper for days or weeks, as it becomes harder to remove the longer it stays on. And never use your best brushes to apply it, because it can ruin them. The fineliner applicator avoids that problem entirely. If you do apply it with a brush, many artists coat an old brush in soap first so the fluid washes out more easily. One more thing: masking fluid contains latex, so avoid it if you have a latex allergy.

That’s where the Maskaway remover block comes in. It’s a rubber block designed for lifting dried masking fluid from your paper. Rubbing gently with Maskaway removes the mask cleanly and reduces the risk of damaging the paper surface, which is much better than picking at it with a fingernail and accidently tearing your painting.

In sixteen years in the art supplies industry, including nearly a decade running digital marketing at ARTdiscount, I’ve seen masking fluid become one of those products watercolour painters can’t do without once they’ve tried it. In our community of 36,000 UK artists at Discount Art Supplies, questions about keeping whites clean and masking fiddley details come up all the time, and Frisk’s fineliner is often the answer.

Getting the best deal on Frisk comes down to a few things. First, compare prices before you buy. Frisk products are relatively inexpensive, but the price for the same bottle or roll can vary noticeably between retailers, and our comparison above checks Cass Art, Jackson’s, Amazon and others in real time. Second, buy the fineliner once and then use refills, as refilling is cheaper than buying a new applicator bottle each time. Third, bundle your order. Small items like masking fluid often attract a delivery charge on their own, so adding them to a larger order to reach a free delivery threshold can save you more than the discount itself. And finally, watch for sales, as UK retailers regularly include masking products in watercolour promotions.

A few questions come up again and again. How do you use Frisk masking fluid? Apply it to dry paper, let it dry completely, paint over it, and once the painting is dry, rub the mask away with a Maskaway block or a clean finger. What is Frisk Film used for? It’s a low-tack adhesive masking film, mainly used by airbrush artists and illustrators to mask areas while painting or spraying. Why is masking fluid tearing my paper? This usually happens on cheaper or softer papers, when the paper or fluid isn’t completely dry, or when the mask has been left on too long. Does Frisk masking fluid contain latex? Yes, so it isn’t suitable for anyone with a latex allergy.

Frisk proves that a small, focused range can be exactly what artists need. Looking for a Frisk sale, discount or discount code? Check the price comparisons above, updated in real time, and you’ll always know you’re getting the best current UK price.
