Founded in 1919 in Saint-Marcel, near Marseille in the south of France, by Claudius Chaveau — a trained chemist who was also genuinly a practising artist — the company started life not as a paint brand at all, but as a chemistry lab supplying lead oxide to paint manufacturers across Europe. The chemical symbol for lead oxide is PbO, and Chaveau simply spelled it out with a couple of extra vowels to create the company name. It's a genuinly lovely bit of industrial history most artists using the brand today have probably never heard.
That chemistry background turned out to matter enormously for what Pébéo became next. Chaveau's early work developing chrome yellow and orange pigments filled a genuine gap in painters' palettes at the time, and those pigments went on to become an important part of the Impressionist movement's colour range — a proper, if lesser-known, French art history connection. The company kept pushing forward from there: in 1934, Pébéo developed ready-to-use oil paints in tubes, originally intended for exterior and industrial use before artists themselves discovered how well they worked, and the brand's genuine reputation in fine art began to build from there.
The innovation streak carried on through generations of the Chaveau family. In 1977, Pébéo became the first company to produce acrylic paint entirely in France, a genuinly significant "Made in France" milestone the brand still points to with real pride today, and one they marked at the time with a nationwide painting competition to celebrate the new medium. Beyond standard fine art paints, Pébéo has built a genuinly distinctive reputation for specialist ranges that push into craft and mixed media territory most traditional paint brands don't touch — Setacolor fabric paints for genuinly vibrant, wearable textile work, Vitrea for stained-glass-style effects on actual glass, Porcelaine for decorating ceramics and crockery, and their long-standing Drawing Gum masking fluid, a genuinly essential tool for watercolourists and illustrators needing to preserve white space cleanly.
What I find genuinly impressive about Pébéo, having watched a lot of brands over sixteen years in this industry, is how consistently they've kept innovating rather than resting on a single hero product. Most paint brands build their whole identity around one flagship range; Pébéo's spread across fine art oils and acrylics, fabric paint, glass and ceramic decoration, and specialist mediums is genuinly unusual, and it's kept the brand relevant to hobbyists and craft-focused buyers as much as to traditional painters.
Given how broad Pébéo's range is and how widely it's stocked across UK art and craft retailers, comparing prices individually before buying is genuinly worth the two minutes it takes — which is exactly what our tool is built for. Rather than checking each stockist separately, we pull current prices together in one place so you can see the best available deal at a glance. Sales on specific Pébéo ranges, particularly their craft and fabric paint lines, do come up periodically, so it's worth checking back regularly if there's something specific you're after.
A few honest questions worth answering. Is Pébéo mainly a fine art brand or a craft brand? Genuinly both, and that's part of its appeal — the same company makes serious oil and acrylic paints for painters alongside genuinly excellent fabric and glass paints for craft and mixed media work. Is it actually made in France? Yes, genuinly still a core part of the brand's identity, and something they've built real heritage around since that 1977 acrylic milestone. Where should you buy from? Check our price comparison above for the full current range and the best available deals across UK retailers before you buy.
