User Rating: Be the first one!
Arches watercolour paper has been made at the same mill in Lorraine, France since 1492 — over 500 years of continuous production. Made from 100% cotton using traditional cylinder moulds and natural gelatin sizing, Arches is the benchmark professional watercolour paper that artists measure everything else against. Looking for an Arches paper sale, discount or best UK price? We compare prices across all major UK art retailers in real time.
There are very few products in the art world that have earned genuine, unquestioned respect across five centuries. Arches paper is one of them.
The mill in the village of Arches in the Vosges region of France has been producing fine art paper continuously since 1492 — the same year Columbus reached America. In that time, Arches paper has been used by Albrecht Dürer, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí. The first edition of James Joyce's Ulysses was printed on it. Napoleon used it. Pierre Beaumarchais used 70 tonnes of it to publish the complete works of Voltaire. That's not marketing. That's a track record most brands would do anything to have.
What makes Arches different from cheaper watercolour papers isn't just the cotton — it's the gelatin sizing applied through the core of every sheet. In 1826, when other mills were switching to cheaper sizing methods, Arches made the decision to retain the traditional process. That choice is why Arches paper can withstand 50 or more washes without breaking down, why colours remain crisp and vibrant, and why paintings on Arches paper are genuinely archival — they'll outlast most things in a house.
The paper comes in three surface types: Cold Press (NOT) is the most popular — a light texture that reflects light well and suits the vast majority of watercolour work. Hot Press is smooth, ideal for fine detail, portraits and illustration. Rough has a more pronounced tooth, encouraging a looser style and working beautifully with granulating pigments.
For watercolour painters, Arches is simply the standard. At ARTdiscount, where I spent nearly a decade managing digital marketing, Arches was consistently one of the most purchased paper brands — not because of clever marketing, but because artists tried it and didn't go back. I've watched that pattern repeat in our community of 36,000 UK artists at Discount Art Supplies. The loyalty to Arches is earned.
It isn't cheap. But it is worth it. And we compare prices across Cass Art, Jacksons Art, Crafty Arts and Amazon to make sure you're always getting the best current UK price before you buy.
