Every acrylic painter knows the frustration. You’re halfway through blending a sky or softening an edge, and the paint has already dried on the canvas and on the palette. Acrylic’s fast drying time is brilliant for building layers quickly, but it makes smooth blending and wet-into-wet work much harder than with oils. Atelier Interactive was created to solve exactly that problem, and it’s why the brand has built such a loyal following among acrylic painters around the world.

Atelier is made by Chroma, an Australian paint maker, and it describes itself as Australia’s most innovative professional acrylic brand. The big idea behind Atelier Interactive is control. Use it straight from the tube and it handles much like a conventional acrylic, drying to a water-resistant film so you can layer as normal. But when you want more time, you can keep the paint workable for longer, typically by misting it lightly with water, and if it’s started to dry, you can bring it back using Atelier Unlocking Formula, which rewets dried paint so you can blend, soften or lift it again. That flexibilty is what makes Interactive so different. It lets you work fast or slow, depending on what each part of the painting needs.

This makes Atelier Interactive particularly well suited to painters who love blending: landscape painters working on skies and soft distances, portrait painters building subtle skin tones, and anyone who has switched from oils to acrylics and misses the longer working time. It’s also very handy for painting outdoors or in warm rooms, where normal acrylics can dry almost as soon as they touch the palette. And because it’s still a water-based acrylic, you get easy clean-up with water and none of the solvents or long drying times of oil paint.

Atelier Interactive is a heavy-body paint, so it holds brushstrokes and knife marks well, and it’s sold in a wide range of colours in sizes from small tubes up to large pots, with colours grouped into price series, as is common with artist-quality paints. Sets of tubes are a popular way to start. Alongside Interactive, Atelier Free Flow is a fluid acrylic with a more liquid consistency, ideal for glazing, fine detail, pouring and techniques where you want the paint to flow. The Atelier mediums add even more control, including the Unlocking Formula for rewetting paint and other mediums for adjusting drying time, texture and finish.

In sixteen years in the art supplies industry, including nearly a decade running digital marketing at ARTdiscount, I’ve seen plenty of acrylic painters struggle with drying times, and Atelier Interactive is one of the most interesting answers to that problem. In our community of 36,000 UK artists at Discount Art Supplies, it comes up whenever someone asks how to blend acrylics more like oils. It isn’t neccesarily the brand every painter needs, but for those who want more time with their paint, it can be a revelation.

Getting the best deal on Atelier comes down to a few things. First, compare prices before you buy. Atelier is a professional brand, and prices can vary between UK retailers, so our comparison above checks Cass Art, Jackson’s, Amazon and others in real time. Second, try a set or a few colours first. Interactive acrylics take a little getting used to, so a starter set is a sensible way to see if the working method suits you before investing in a full palette. Third, buy the Unlocking Formula alongside the paint. It’s the key to getting the most out of Interactive, and it’s easy to forget. Fourth, buy larger sizes of the colours you use most, especially white, as bigger tubes and pots usually work out cheaper per millilitre. And finally, watch for sales. Atelier is regularly included in UK retailer promotions, especially around Black Friday and in seasonal acrylic sales.

A few questions come up again and again. What is interactive acrylic paint? It’s an acrylic that lets you control the drying time. It can be kept wet and workable for longer, or rewet once it has started to dry, giving you more time for blending. What does Atelier Unlocking Formula do? It rewets dried Atelier Interactive paint so you can blend, soften or lift it again. Can you mix Atelier Interactive with other acrylics? Generally yes, but mixing with standard acrylics will reduce the interactive properties, so test first. Is Atelier Interactive good for beginners? Yes, especially for beginners who find normal acrylics dry too fast. The extra working time makes blending much more forgiving.

Atelier Interactive gives acrylic painters something rare: more time. Looking for an Atelier sale, discount or discount code? Check the price comparisons above, updated in real time, and you’ll always know you’re getting the best current UK price.
