Paint by numbers has had something of a renaissance over the last few years and DIY Art Club has arrived at exactly the right moment to capitalise on it. The format — a pre-printed numbered canvas with corresponding numbered paints — is one of those ideas so effective at making painting accessable that it's easy to underestimate how much creative satisfaction it actually delivers. People who would never describe themselves as artists finish a DIY Art Club kit and end up with something they genuinley want to hang on the wall. That's not nothing. Lucy had a go at one of their kits a while back and I watched her spend three evenings completely absorbed in it — which, for someone who paints watercolours regularly and would normally dismiss paint by numbers as too beginner-focused, says quite a lot about the format's appeal.
I run Discount Art Supplies — a price comparison and deals platform used by over 36,000 artists and crafters across all our channels — and paint by numbers sits at an interesting intersection between the dedicated art supplies world and the broader craft and leisure market. DIY Art Club occupies the upper end of that market. The quality of the canvas, the consistency of the numbered paint portions and the range of designs available put them ahead of the cheaper kit brands that flood the market with low-resolution prints and watery paint.
The range covers over 1,600 designs across a genuinley broad spread of subjects and styles. The standard kits cover landscapes, wildlife, botanicals, portraits, abstract designs and pop culture-inspired images — enough variety that finding something appealing regardless of taste or interior style is straightforward. The mini kits are a smart entry point — smaller canvases at lower price points that let someone try the format without significant financial commitment. The cocktail-themed kits have built a following of their own, popular as gifts and for paint and sip evenings. The cocktail aesthetic — vibrant, slightly cheeky, designed for social painting sessions — is a different proposition to the more traditional landscape and floral subjects and has found its own audience accordingly.
The custom kit option is where DIY Art Club does something genuinley distinctive. Upload a photograph — a pet portrait, a family photo, a favourite landscape — and their team converts it into a paint by numbers kit in the same format as the standard range. The result is a painting that means something personal rather than reproducing a generic design. For gifts in particular, a custom kit built from a photo the recipient wouldn't expect to see translated into paint is a considerate and original choice. The conversion quality varies with image complexity but the concept is sound and the execution is generally well received.
Kits arrive with the pre-printed numbered canvas, a set of brushes and numbered acrylic paints in the quantities required to complete the piece. Some kits arrive pre-stretched on a wooden frame; others arrive rolled with a DIY wooden frame included for self-assembly. The product page for each kit specifies which format applies, so it's worth checking before ordering if you have a preference. Free delivery is included on all orders — a meaningful advantage over competitors who add shipping costs at checkout.
