Winsor & Newton: The World’s Finest Artists’ Materials Since 1832

For nearly two centuries, Winsor & Newton has stood at the intersection of art and science. Founded in 1832 at 38 Rathbone Place, London, the partnership between William Winsor and Henry Newton revolutionized the art world. They were responsible for inventing the world’s first moist watercolors in 1835 and patenting the first screw-cap collapsible metal tube in 1842—a breakthrough that allowed artists like J.M.W. Turner to paint en plein air for the first time. Their commitment to quality earned them the Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria in 1841, an honor they have held ever since, now serving the household of His Majesty King Charles III.

Today, Winsor & Newton is celebrated for its iconic Series 7 Kolinsky Sable brushes, professional-grade pigments, and the high-performance Promarker range. While now part of the global Colart group, the brand maintains its deep British heritage and a rigorous “artist-fronted” approach to development. From the historic archives used to recreate lost pigments to modern sustainability initiatives, Winsor & Newton remains the definitive choice for professionals and hobbyists who demand permanence, brilliance, and precision in every stroke.
