The 4 Best Art Supply Shops in Newport

The 4 Best Art Supply Shops in Newport | Discount Art Supplies

Written by Paul Worrall

Newport doesn’t get talked about the way Cardiff does, and I think that’s genuinly unfair. It’s got a proper creative backbone — a renovated Victorian indoor market that’s become a real destination in its own right, a theatre and arts centre that takes workshops as seriously as performances, and enough independent character that it deserves more than being treated as Cardiff’s quieter neighbour.

I’m Paul Worrall. I spent close to a decade running digital marketing for one of the UK’s largest online art retailers, and I now run Discount Art Supplies, a price comparison platform used by artists across the country every week. I’ll be honest — I’ve never actually made it to Newport myself, it’s one of the gaps in a fairly long list of UK cities I’ve researched but not visited — but I know how to tell a genuine local option from a padded-out listing, and Newport’s options are more solid than a lot of similarly sized cities I’ve covered. If you’re planning a wider South Wales trip, our guide to the best art supply shops in Cardiff is worth a look too.

1. Hobbycraft — Harlech Retail Park

Hobbycraft Newport Harlech Retail Park

Hobbycraft Newport, out at Harlech Retail Park on Cardiff Road, is the obvious first stop for anyone who wants reliable stock without hunting around. I know plenty of art world purists who look down on Hobbycraft, and I’ve genuinly never understood the snobbery — having spent years watching what UK hobbyist and student artists actually buy, Hobbycraft serves that market properly rather than as an afterthought.

Everyday consumables — canvases, acrylics, sketchbooks, brushes — are well stocked and consistantly good value, and the retail park setting means easy parking, which matters more than people admit when you’re loading up on bulky supplies. It’s not where you’d go for specialist professional-grade materials, but for the vast majority of artists in and around Newport, it’s a dependable resource.

Check our paints and mediums deals page before you go — the same lines are sometimes cheaper online.

2. The Gallery — Newport Market

The Gallery art supplies stall Newport Market

This is the one I’d point people to first if they want something more distinctive than a retail park. The Gallery is an independent art supplies stall inside Newport Market — the Grade II listed Victorian building on Upper Dock Street that went through a multi-million pound renovation in 2022 and has become a proper destination in its own right, with independent traders, food stalls and a genuine sense of occasion that a standard high street shop can’t replicate.

Finding dedicated art supplies inside a working Victorian market is exactly the kind of thing that makes a city’s creative scene feel alive rather than corporate. It won’t have the sheer breadth of a superstore, but stalls like this tend to know their regular customers and their stock properly — worth seeking out rather than walking past.

Located in the Provision Market, Upper Dock Street, Newport NP20 1DD — check current opening hours before visiting, as independent market stalls can vary.

3. The Range — Newport Retail Park

The Range doesn’t market itself as an art shop first, but its arts and crafts department is bigger and better stocked than most people expect — paint brushes, acrylics, watercolours and oils, sketchbooks, easels and portfolios, alongside a proper papercraft and scrapbooking range for anyone working across mixed media.

For parents buying supplies for kids, or anyone wanting to stock up on basics alongside a broader shopping trip, it’s a genuinly useful stop — and it sits at prices that make experimenting with a new medium affordable rather than a big commitment. Not a specialist destination, but it earns its place on a practical list rather than an aspirational one.

4. The Art Shop & Chapel — Abergavenny (nearest specialist)

The Art Shop and Chapel independent art materials shop Abergavenny

There’s no dedicated specialist art materials shop inside Newport itself, which is worth being honest about. The nearest genuine one is The Art Shop & Chapel in Abergavenny, about twenty miles up the valley — a long-established independent housed in a carefully restored 16th century townhouse, stocking proper artists’ materials and fine papers alongside a programme of exhibitions, life drawing days and workshops.

It’s a destination shop rather than a quick top-up — the kind of place worth planning a visit around rather than dropping into on a whim. But for anyone in Newport who’s outgrown the superstores and wants genuine specialist stock and knowledgeable advice, it’s importent to know it exists within reasonable reach.

The State of Newport’s Art Scene

Newport itself has three solid options — a proper superstore, a genuine independent inside a landmark Victorian market, and a reliable all-rounder — plus a specialist worth the short drive out for anyone after professional-grade materials. It’s not overflowing with dedicated art shops the way some cities are, but what’s there is honest and worth using rather than a collection of thin, padded-out listings.

For anything beyond what’s on these shelves, Discount Art Supplies compares prices across the major UK retailers in real time, so you can always find the best current deal before buying.
