Winchester doesn’t have a huge spread of art supply options, but what’s there is genuinly solid rather than padded out — a proper fine art specialist and a framer that takes its materials seriously too, both right in the historic city centre.
I’m Paul Worrall. I spent close to a decade running digital marketing for one of the UK’s largest online art retailers, and I now run Discount Art Supplies, a price comparison platform used by artists across the country every week. I’ve never been to Winchester myself, but I know how to separate a genuine local option from a padded-out listing, and both of these checked out properly.
1. Pullingers Art Shop — Inside C&H, High Street
Pullingers is a genuine, well-established fine art and graphic supplies specialist with several branches across the South of England, and the Winchester concession — opened in February 2019 — sits on the top floor of Closs & Hamblin, a department store that’s itself been trading since 1909. It’s a proper destination stop rather than a shelf tucked into a corner, specialising specifically in fine art and graphic materials for professionals, students and beginners.
Being part of a wider group with genuine buying power means the range and pricing are consistantly competitive with what you’d expect from a much larger dedicated art shop, while still getting the benefit of staff who know the stock properly. Worth combining a visit with a browse of the rest of C&H, given it’s also stocked fabrics, haberdashery and craft supplies since 1909.

2. Winchester Framing — Bridge Street
Don’t let the name put you off — this is genuinly a proper art supplies shop as well as a bespoke picture framer, stocking paints and canvases, pastels and sketching supplies, watercolours and brushes, printmaking materials and inks alongside its framing service. That combination of “buy the materials, get the finished piece framed properly” under one roof is a genuinly practical setup for anyone working on a piece intended for display.
It’s a smaller, more personal operation than Pullingers, and the kind of shop where the staff’s framing expertise often spills over into genuinly useful advice on materials too — worth asking if you’re unsure what a particular piece needs.

The Honest Verdict on Winchester
Winchester’s options are compact but genuine — a proper fine art specialist and a framer that stocks real materials rather than just finished work. It’s not a huge scene, but both of these are worth using rather than settling for a generic stationery aisle.
For anything beyond what’s on these shelves, Discount Art Supplies compares prices across the major UK retailers in real time, so you can find the best current deal before buying.
