The Best Magnetic Drawing Boards for Kids UK

Written by Paul Worrall

Unlike a lot of the newer “screen-free” drawing gadgets on the market, magnetic drawing boards genuinly have real history behind them — this isn’t a category invented last year by an anonymous marketplace seller chasing a trend, it’s a genuinly proper toy with over fifty years of track record. That makes it a much easier category to actually recommend specific products in, rather than just a set of criteria to judge anonymous listings against.

I’ve spent 16 years in the UK art and craft supplies industry and now run Discount Art Supplies, used by over 41,000 UK artists and parents every week. My own two kids, Zach and Nancy, have both had one of these at various points, so this comes from genuine kitchen-table use as much as industry knowledge.

1. Cra-Z-Art Original Magna Doodle — Best Overall

Magna Doodle is genuinly the name that basically invented this whole category — first developed back in 1974, commercially launched by Tyco in 1990, and now produced by Cra-Z-Art, with over forty million units sold worldwide across five decades. If you’ve ever used one of these as a kid yourself, there’s a genuine chance it was actually a Magna Doodle, whatever the box happened to say.

The mechanism is genuinly simple and still works exactly as well as it always did — a magnetic stylus drags dark particles to the surface to draw, and a sliding eraser bar clears it instantly for another go. No batteries, no charging, nothing to go wrong. For most families, this is genuinly the sensible default choice, precisely because it’s been proven for fifty years rather than a few months.

2. Melissa & Doug Magnetic Drawing Board — Best Premium/Wooden Option

Melissa & Doug has genuinly built a strong, trustworthy reputation in the UK and US for wooden, well-made children’s toys, and their take on the magnetic drawing board fits that pattern — a genuinly sturdier wooden frame than the standard plastic Magna Doodle, often built into a wider easel or activity board rather than a standalone panel.

It’s a considered purchase rather than an impulse buy, genuinly aimed at parents who want something that looks and feels like a proper piece of furniture in a playroom rather than a plastic toy, and who are happy paying more for that build quality.

3. Magna Doodle Travel/Mini — Best for Travel

The smaller travel versions of Magna Doodle have genuinly been around almost as long as the original — a compact, lightweight version built specifically for car journeys, restaurant tables and anywhere else you need a genuinly quiet, mess-free distraction that fits in a bag.

It won’t give the same drawing space as a full-size board, but for the specific job of travel entertainment, that’s genuinly the whole point — smaller, tougher, and built to survive being thrown in and out of a bag repeatedly.

4. Licensed Character Magnetic Board — Best for Character Fans

Several well-known children’s characters — Bluey and Peppa Pig among them — have official licensed magnetic drawing boards, using the same genuinly reliable underlying mechanism as the original Magna Doodle, just with recognisable branding and character-shaped stamps included.

If a specific show or character is genuinly the thing that’ll get your child excited about a gift, this is a sensible way to combine that enthusiasm with a toy that works properly, rather than a generic unbranded alternative.

5. Basic Magnetic Doodle Board — Best Budget

Beyond the established Magna Doodle and Melissa & Doug names, there’s genuinly a wide field of generic, unbranded magnetic doodle boards at lower prices — functionally similar, using the same basic magnetic principle, without the brand history or guaranteed build quality behind them. Worth being honest that quality does vary more here than with the established names, so checking genuine recent reviews on the specific listing matters more than it would with a Magna Doodle.

A sensible option if budget is the priority or you’re testing whether your child will actually enjoy this type of toy before spending more on an established brand.

How Magnetic Drawing Boards Actually Work

The mechanism genuinly hasn’t changed since 1974, because it doesn’t need to — a sealed panel is filled with a thick white liquid containing tiny dark magnetic particles. The magnetic stylus, dragged across the surface, pulls those particles up to create a visible line. A sliding eraser bar behind the panel redistributes the particles evenly again, wiping the drawing clean in one motion. No batteries, no ink, no paper, genuinly nothing to run out or replace.

Which Should You Buy?

If you want the genuine original, proven over fifty years, Cra-Z-Art’s Magna Doodle is the sensible default. Melissa & Doug’s version suits anyone wanting a sturdier, more furniture-like build and happy to pay more for it. The travel-size Magna Doodle is worth adding specifically for car journeys and days out. A licensed character version is a nice way to combine a favourite show with a toy that actually works well, and a basic generic board is fine for testing the format on a budget — just check genuine reviews on the specific listing first.
