Best Alcohol Markers UK — An Honest Guide for Every Level

Best Alcohol Markers UK — An Honest Guide for Every Level | Discount Art Supplies

Written by Paul Worrall

I’ll be straight with you: alcohol markers are not my medium. I spent nearly a decade at ARTdiscount and I’ve been in the art supplies industry for sixteen years, but my personal experience of alcohol markers is essentially limited to watching other people use them exceptionally well and buying my son Zach a starter set of Ohuhus last Christmas that he immedietly started using to colour his football sticker illustrations with a level of seriousness I hadn’t expected from a nine year old. What I do have is sixteen years of watching what illustrators, designers, manga artists and concept artists actually buy, what they come back for, what they upgrade from and what they stick with. That’s a different kind of knowledge to personal use, but it’s not nothing — and this guide is built on it.

The alcohol marker market has changed significently in the last five years. Copic is still the professional gold standard but the gap between Copic and the best budget alternatives has narrowed considerably. Ohuhu in particular — the brand Zach has been colouring with since December — has genuinly surprised the professional marker community with how well it performs at its price point. Here’s the honest picture before you spend anything. And as always, check our live alcohol marker price comparison before buying — prices vary meaningfully between UK stockists on identical products.

Best professional system: Copic Sketch Markers — 358 colours, refillable, replaceable nibs, the industry standard for professional illustrators and manga artists.

Best mid-range UK option: Winsor & Newton Promarker — 189 colours, available individually, the most popular professional alcohol marker made by a UK brand.

Best budget / best value overall: Ohuhu Alcohol Markers — up to 320 colours, dual tip, the strongest budget alternative and a genuine surprise for most professional artists who try them.

Best for beginners on a tight budget: Arteza Alcohol Markers — wide colour range, affordable sets, reliable entry point for artists testing the medium.

Best UK craft brand option: Spectrum Noir — available in major UK craft retailers, refillable, good range, particularly popular in the card making and crafting community.

Best for unique blending effects: Chameleon Color Tones — a genuinly different system that creates tone-on-tone gradients from a single marker using a mixing chamber.

What Are Alcohol Markers — and Who Are They For?

Alcohol markers use alcohol-based ink rather than water-based ink, which gives them several characteristics that make them the preferred medium for illustrators, concept artists, manga artists and designers. The ink dries fast — within seconds — which means you can layer and blend without waiting. The colours are vibrant and consistent. The ink is transparent in a way that allows layering to build depth and tonal range. And crucially, alcohol ink bleeds through most standard paper, which means you need either dedicated marker paper or the understanding that you’re working on a single side.

At ARTdiscount we sold a lot of alcohol markers — primarily Promarkers to designers and illustrators and Copics to the serious professionals and manga artists who knew exactly what they were buying and why. The customer who comes in asking for “the best markers” and the customer who comes in asking for “Copic Sketch B24 and B26” are having very different conversations, and understanding where you are on that spectrum tells you what to buy.

Copic Sketch Markers — The Professional Standard

🔍 Compare Copic Prices →

Copic Sketch Markers are the professional gold standard — 358 colours in the full range, refillable ink reservoirs, replaceable nibs in both brush and broad chisel formats, and a colour consistency that professional illustrators depend on for client work where colours need to match exactly across sessions and projects. The blending is genuinly excellent, the ink flow is smooth and controllable, and the refillable system means that while the upfront cost per marker is high — typically £5-8 each — the long-term cost of ownership comes down significantly for artists who use them regularly.

The honest caveat is the price. A complete set of 358 Copic Sketch markers would cost well over £1,500. Most professionals build their collection gradually, buying individual colours as specific projects require them rather than buying sets. The structured colour numbering system — which organises colours by hue family and saturation — makes individual colour selection genuinly straightforward once you understand it, which is part of what makes Copic the system of choice for serious long-term use. For beginners, starting with a small Copic set of 12-24 colours and supplementing with Ohuhu for the broader palette makes more financial sense than going all-in on Copic from the start.

Winsor & Newton Promarker — Best Mid-Range UK Option

🔍 Compare Promarker Prices →

Winsor & Newton Promarker is the most established professional alcohol marker made by a UK art brand, and the one I saw bought most consistently by designers and illustrators at ARTdiscount who wanted professional quality without Copic prices. 189 colours available individually or in curated sets, dual tip with a fine bullet nib and a broad chisel nib, and the translucent alcohol-based ink that makes layering and tonal graduation naturaly satisfying to work with.

Promarkers are genuinly good tools — consistent, reliable, well-made, available in most major UK art retailers which matters when you need to replace a specific colour quickly without ordering online. The honest comparision to Copic is that the blending is slightly less smooth and the colour range at 189 is less comprehensive than Copic’s 358, but at a fraction of the cost per marker they represent excellent value for designers, illustrators and serious hobbyists who don’t need the full professional Copic system. Ohuhu Alcohol Markers — Best Value by a Considerable Margin

My son Zach got a set of Ohuhu markers last Christmas and used them more seriously than I expected. The set he got was a 48-colour version and the colour vibrancy genuinly surprised me when I sat with him and had a look at what he’d been doing with them — clean, consistent, blending reasonably well even in the hands of a nine year old who was figuring it out as he went.

The professional art community has been similarly surprised by Ohuhu. The Honolulu series offers 320 colours with dual brush and chisel tips at a price point that makes a complete set cost roughly the same as twenty individual Copic markers. The blending is genuinly good — not quite at Copic’s level for the very fine blending that professional manga artists depend on, but comfortably above what you’d expect at the price. The brush nib in particular has received consistent praise for its feel and control. For beginners, budget-conscious hobbyists, students and anyone who wants to explore alcohol markers without the financial commitment of Copic, Ohuhu is the honest recommendation.

Arteza Alcohol Markers — Reliable Budget Option

🔍 Compare Arteza Prices →

Arteza alcohol markers offer a wide colour range in affordable sets and are a consistent recommendation for beginners who want to test the medium before committing to Copic or Promarker budgets. The quality trails Ohuhu slightly in independent comparisons but the sets are well-priced, the colour range covers the basics well, and the dual tip format follows the same chisel and fine nib convention as most other markers in the market. A solid entry point, particularly for adults taking up illustration or adult colouring as a hobby rather than developing a serious professional practice.

Spectrum Noir — Best UK Craft Brand Option

Spectrum Noir is particularly well-established in the UK card making and crafting community — widely available in Hobbycraft and other UK craft retailers, refillable, with a good colour range and the twin tip format most alcohol marker users expect. For artists coming to alcohol markers from a crafting background rather than a fine art or illustration background, Spectrum Noir is the familiar option that’s likely already on the shelf in their local shop. The quality is solid for the price and the refill availability sets it apart from purely disposable budget alternatives.

Chameleon Color Tones — For Unique Blending Effects

UK Price Comparison

🔍 Compare Chameleon Prices →

Chameleon Color Tones work on a genuinly different principle to every other marker in this guide. A mixing chamber in the cap allows you to blend the marker’s ink with a colourless solution before applying it, creating tone-on-tone gradients from a single marker without needing a second blending marker. The result is a natural fade from light to dark within a single colour that other marker systems can only achieve by buying multiple shades of the same hue. For artists who do a lot of gradient work — botanical illustration, portrait work, product rendering — the Chameleon system offers something no other brand quite replicates. Not the right starting point for beginners, but a distinctive option worth knowing about once you’re comfortable with alcohol markers generally.

Which Alcohol Markers Should You Buy?

For professional illustrators, manga artists and designers who need colour consistency and long-term value: Copic Sketch. For serious hobbyists and working illustrators who want professional quality without Copic prices: Winsor & Newton Promarker. For beginners and budget-conscious artists who want the most colour for their money: Ohuhu. For UK crafters who want availability in local shops and refill options: Spectrum Noir. For artists who do a lot of gradient and tonal work: Chameleon.
