The 6 Best Art Supplies Shops in Sheffield (2026 Guide)

The 6 Best Art Supplies Shops in Sheffield | Discount Art Supplies

Sheffield doesn’t always get the credit it deserves as an arts city. People think Manchester, London, Bristol — but Sheffield has a genuinely strong creative scene, a huge student population from both universities, and some brilliant places to buy art supplies if you know where to look.

I’ve spent 16 years working in the UK art supplies industry — nearly a decade as digital marketing manager for one of the country’s biggest online art retailers, and more recently as founder of Discount Art Supplies, a price comparison platform with 36,000 subscribers and a 15,000 strong Facebook community of UK artists. I’ve seen more art shops than I care to remember. I know what makes a good one.

So here’s my honest guide to the best art supplies shops in Sheffield — whether you’re a student at Sheffield Hallam, a hobbyist painter, or a working artist who just needs to know where to get what you need without a 48-hour delivery wait.

If you’re planning a trip to another northern city, also check out our guides to Manchester’s best art shops and the 10 best art shops in Liverpool.

1. Fred Aldous — Fitzalan Square

Fred Aldous art supplies shop Sheffield Fitzalan Square

If you only visit one art shop in Sheffield, make it Fred Aldous. They stock over 25,000 art, craft, photography and gift products across two floors right in the heart of the city at Fitzalan Square — brilliant transport links whether you’re coming by train, tram or bus.

Fred Aldous is one of those shops that reminds you why physical retail still matters. The staff are enthusiastic, knowledgeable and genuinely helpful — which isn’t always the case in larger chains. The range covers everything from fine art materials through to craft, stationery and gifts, so it’s worth a browse even if you’re not after anything specific.

Reviewers consistently mention how good it is for specialist and niche products — the kind of things you’d usually have to order online and wait days for. For artists who want to test a paper or feel the weight of a brush before buying, that alone is worth the trip.

2. Hobbycraft Sheffield

Hobbycraft Sheffield art and craft store

I’ll be honest — Hobbycraft divides opinion in the art world. Some artists turn their nose up at it. But having spent years watching what the UK’s hobbyist art community actually buys, I can tell you that Hobbycraft serves a huge chunk of it, and serves it well.

For everyday consumables — canvases, basic acrylics, sketchbooks, brushes — it’s hard to beat on convenience and price. If you’ve got kids who paint (my two, Zach aged nine and Nancy aged six, go through art supplies at an alarming rate), Hobbycraft is often your best bet for decent quality at a price that doesn’t sting when half of it ends up on the kitchen table.

The Sheffield store is well-stocked and regularly runs promotions. It’s not where you’d go for professional-grade materials, but for hobbyists and beginners it does exactly what it says on the tin.

3. Loxley Arts — Sheffield S13

Loxley Arts factory shop Sheffield S13

This one is a bit of a hidden gem and something Sheffield should be much more proud of. Loxley Arts are a Sheffield-based manufacturer of high-quality painting surfaces — canvases, boards and panels — and they operate a factory shop at their site in Orgreave, Sheffield S13.

If you paint on canvas at any kind of volume, buying direct from a manufacturer like this is one of the smartest things you can do. Loxley have been making canvases for decades and the quality is genuinely excellent — all hand-crafted using ethically sourced materials. The fact that they’re Sheffield-made adds something too, particularly if you care about buying British.

Worth checking their website before you visit to confirm current factory shop hours, but if you get the chance to go, definately worth the trip. There’s something quite special about buying your canvas from the place where it was actually made.

4. The Works — Meadowhall

The Works art supplies shop Meadowhall Sheffield

The Works won’t win any awards for specialist art supplies, but it earns its place on this list for one reason: value. If you need to stock up on the basics — canvases, sketch pads, pencils, brushes, acrylic sets — The Works at Meadowhall regularly has these at prices that undercut most other retailers significantly.

For hobbyist artists on a budget, or for anyone buying supplies in bulk (parents, teachers, community groups), it’s hard to ignore. The range isn’t deep, but what they stock tends to be good value for the price point. And Meadowhall is easy to get to by tram, which helps.

I’d always reccomend checking our current paint and medium deals before any shop visit — you might find a better price online. But for grab-and-go convenience and impulse buys, The Works earns its spot.

5. Millennium Gallery Shop — City Centre

Millennium Gallery Shop Sheffield city centre

This one is a little different, and I’d argue it’s one of the most underrated stops for artists visiting Sheffield. The Millennium Gallery on Arundel Gate is Sheffield’s premier destination for art, craft and design — and its shop is genuinely excellent.

You won’t find tubes of paint or sketchbooks here. What you will find is a carefully curated selection of art prints, handmade jewellery, books, cards and locally-made gifts — the kind of shop that inspires you creatively rather than just resupplying you. For artists who care about the broader creative world, not just their own supplies, it’s worth an hour of your time.

The gallery itself hosts major touring exhibitions from partners including the V&A and Tate, so combine a supply run at Fred Aldous with an exhibition visit and you’ve got a proper Sheffield art day sorted. Open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm, and Sunday 11am to 5pm.

6. Scrap Dragon — Sheffield CIC

Scrap Dragon Sheffield CIC sustainable art materials

Scrap Dragon is the kind of place that exists in Sheffield and wouldn’t really work anywhere else. It’s a not-for-profit community interest company that collects waste materials from local businesses and manufacturers, then sorts and processes them to provide Sheffield artists, crafters and schools with an affordable, sustainable source of creative materials.

In practice, it means you can get all kinds of useful stuff — paper, card, fabric, offcuts, packaging materials and more — at a fraction of what you’d pay in a conventional shop, whilst keeping useable materials out of landfill. If you’re an artist who cares about sustainability or just wants to experiment without spending much, Scrap Dragon is genuinely brilliant.

It’s also the kind of community resource I love to see. Having spent years building an online artist community of 15,000 people at Discount Art Supplies, I know how much places like this matter to the creative scene of a city. Support them.

Bonus: Don’t Forget Online Options

Sheffield has a decent selection of physical shops, but for specialist supplies, professional-grade materials, or simply getting the best price, online is often the smarter option. We track prices across all the major UK art retailers at Discount Art Supplies — it’s worth checking before you commit to buying in store.

Broad Canvas are also worth a mention as an online retailer with a strong reputation among Sheffield artists — and we track the best canvas and paper deals across all UK retailers — browse current canvas and paper deals here.
