Luton doesn’t often get mentioned alongside the UK’s more celebrated art destinations, but it’s got a genuinly solid, practical set of options once you strip away the listings that don’t actually check out — and one long-standing independent that most guides to the town don’t even mention.
I’m Paul Worrall. I spent close to a decade running digital marketing for one of the UK’s largest online art retailers, and I now run Discount Art Supplies, a price comparison platform used by artists across the country every week. I’ve never been to Luton myself, but I know how to separate a genuine local option from a padded-out listing, and Luton’s options held up better than a few other towns I’ve covered recently. If you’re planning further afield, our guides to the best art supply shops in Cambridge and London are worth a look too.
1. Bayliss Wright — Park Street
This is the find of the guide. Bayliss Wright has been trading from Park Street for decades — Companies House shows the business incorporated back in 1960, and it’s still active today, which is a genuinly rare thing to find on a UK high street in this category. It’s a proper independent, stocking a wide range of artist materials alongside office stationery and drawing equipment, plus large format printing and plan copying services on-site.
That combination — art materials and professional printing under one roof — is exactly the kind of specialist local resource that tends to disappear from smaller towns first, so it’s genuinly worth supporting if you’re in the area. Independents that survive this long usually do so because they know their regular customers and their stock properly, not because of a marketing budget.

2. Hobbycraft — Luton
Hobbycraft Luton is the obvious next stop for anyone who wants a properly stocked range of everyday consumables without hunting around — canvases, acrylics, sketchbooks, brushes, all consistantly well stocked and reasonably priced. It’s not a specialist destination for professional-grade materials, but for the vast majority of hobbyist and student artists in the area, it does the job properly.
Check our paints and mediums deals page before you go — the same lines are sometimes cheaper online.
3. The Works — The Mall
The Works, in The Mall shopping centre, is the more convenient option for anyone shopping in the town centre rather than driving out to a retail park. Its arts and crafts range sits alongside the usual mix of books, stationery and discounted essentials — a genuine option for basic art materials rather than an afterthought squeezed onto a shelf.
It won’t satisfy anyone after a wide range of professional-grade materials, and it never claims to. But for students, parents buying supplies for kids, or anyone wanting to top up basics while already in the centre, it’s an accessable and reliable stop.

The Honest Verdict on Luton
Luton’s options are more solid than its reputation as an art destination suggests — a genuine, decades-old independent alongside two dependable high street names. It’s not a huge scene, but what’s there is honest and worth using, led by a shop that deserves more recognition than it tends to get.
For anything beyond what’s on these shelves, Discount Art Supplies compares prices across the major UK retailers in real time, so you can find the best current deal without needing a specialist shop on your own doorstep.
