If you want to understand why an artist might choose to live in or around Swansea, start with the Gower Peninsula rather than the city itself. The Gower was the first place in the entire United Kingdom to be designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, back in 1956 — limestone headlands, tidal estuaries, Atlantic-facing beaches, the kind of light that changes hour by hour and makes the same coastal view look completely different at dawn than it does at four in the afternoon. Dylan Thomas, who grew up in Swansea, called this stretch of South Wales “the loveliest village in Wales” — and that was about Laugharne, not even Gower. The point is that this is a part of the world that produces artists and inspires painting in a way that flat, landlocked cities simply don’t.
I’m Paul Worrall. I spent nearly a decade running digital marketing for ARTdiscount, one of the UK’s largest online art retailers, and I now run Discount Art Supplies — a price comparison platform used by over 36,000 UK artists every week. I’ve never been to Swansea, which is a genuinly significant gap given everything above, but the research for this guide gave me a clear picture of what the city offers artists who need supplies as well as inspiration. If you’re planning visits to nearby cities, also check out our guide to the best art supply shops in Cardiff.
1. Harrison’s of Swansea
Harrison’s of Swansea is the city’s dedicated artist materials and stationery specialist, and the range on their website tells you immediately that this is a shop run by people who genuinly know the products they stock. Daler-Rowney across the board — oils, watercolours, acrylics, pastels, pads and papers. Winsor & Newton. Derwent Pastel Pencils, Inktense Pencils and Graphitint Pencils available individually or in sets. Staedtler pens, inks and Mars pencils. Pro Arte brushes. Bockingford, Whatman, Waterford and Conqueror watercolour papers available individually or as pads in different weights and sizes. A full range of inks — waterproof, acrylic, calligraphy, Waterman, Parker — and lino cutting supplies.
The breadth and specificity of that range is the sign of a proper independent specialist rather than a general craft shop with an art aisle. Bockingford paper stocked individually — that’s the detail that tells you the person ordering the stock is thinking about working artists rather than casual browsers. For Swansea artists wanting a local source for professional materials, Harrison’s is the obvious first call.

2. Gower Gallery & Framing — Mumbles
Mumbles sits at the western tip of Swansea Bay, right on the edge of the Gower Peninsula, and the Gower Gallery & Framing is exactly the kind of gallery that makes sense in a place like this — fine art prints, original paintings, sculpture and curated giftware from artists who are clearly responding to the extraordinary landscape they’re working in. The bespoke framing service handles everything in-house, which is useful for Swansea artists who want a local framer they can trust rather than posting work to London.
For anyone visiting Mumbles — and it’s worth visiting purely for the village itself, the seafront, the views back across Swansea Bay — the Gower Gallery is the kind of stop that either reminds you why you make art or gives you half a dozen new ideas for your next series. Both outcomes seem worth a detour.

3. Hobbycraft Swansea
The honest version of Hobbycraft, consistent with every city guide I write: not specialist, not deep in professional-grade range, but genuinly reliable for everyday art and craft consumables at fair prices. For parents, teachers and hobbyists who need canvases, basic paint sets, sketchbooks, seasonal kits and kids’ craft supplies without ceremony, it serves that purpose well and without pretending to be something it isn’t.
Check our Hobbycraft discount code guide before visiting — the student discount and Blue Light Card discount are both worth knowing about.
4. The Works — Swansea
The honest version of The Works, consistent with every guide I write: canvases, sketchpads, pencils, starter acrylic sets and colouring books at prices that make experimenting genuinly risk-free. Not specialist, not deep in range, but genuinly useful for what it is. Worth knowing that The Works stopped selling online nationally back in March, so the Swansea store — like every other Works in the country — is now in-person purchase only.
A Note on Art Supplies in Swansea — and the Gower
Swansea’s art supplies provision is more solid than its reputation as a secondary Welsh city might suggest — Harrison’s is a genuinly proper specialist, and the Gower Gallery in Mumbles adds a dimension that most city guides for comparable towns can’t match. But the bigger point about art in this part of Wales is the landscape itself. Artists who live and work around the Gower have access to the kind of subject matter — light, coastline, weather — that painters actively relocate themselves to find. That’s not something any art supplies shop can sell you. It’s just there, free, from the Mumbles headland on a clear morning looking out at the Bristol Channel.
For professional-grade materials and the best current UK prices across all major art retailers, Discount Art Supplies compares prices in real time so you always find the best deal before buying anywhere.
